A first-person biographical and archival essay by Nikki Craft on the stretch of California coast — Big Sur, Esalen, Santa Cruz, and the beaches from Año Nuevo and Point Lobos south toward San Diego — where she lived at the height of her physical strength, sleeping in her pickup truck open to the sky and sea, and swimming daily in cold water as a discipline she describes not as thrill-seeking but as medicine. The essay recounts a near-drowning in a rip current at Pfeiffer Beach and her command of the water (including swimming the Stanislaus River in 1979 during Mark Dubois’s protest of the New Melones Dam); her year as executive supervisor of housekeeping at Big Sur’s Ventana Inn and the working-class radicalization on economic disparity that came from it, culminating in her plain anti-billionaire and ecological position; her accidental early discovery of microdosing psilocybin as an antidepressant that improved her work; and her connection, through the Henry Miller literary circle, to book distributor and publisher William “Bill” Webb, Emil White’s Wilhelm Reich Memorial Library, and Lee Baxandall — a connection that traces the origin of her later Stack o’ Wheat prints protest to a night alone in Webb’s storage room.
